The Sheridan Applied Photography diploma program offers a superb education in the conceptual and aesthetic aspects of photography. Unlike most photography school programs and courses, we focus on high-end commercial work. You'll learn to do more than craft images in our photography courses; you'll also learn to create perceptions and communicate ideas.
Sheridan provides more specific preparation for careers in advertising, fashion, print and web publication, and corporate photography than other photography colleges. In just two years you'll be ready to compete in the workplace: our graduates are extremely successful in the job market.
Shoot First, Ask Questions Later
You’ll begin making photographs almost from the first day of your first photography course, completing hands-on assignments that mirror the work you’ll do as a professional. Your photography school portfolio will include:
- Studio and on-location shots
- Print advertisements
- Fashion photos
- Architectural and industrial photographs
- Photo documentaries
- CD / DVD and magazine covers
- Portraits
- Digitally enhanced images
- Conceptual photography
Sheridan is the best-equipped photography college on the continent, so you’ll learn to use all the current industry-standard cameras (including DSLR, medium- and large-format digital), studio and location lights, exposure meters, up-to-date colour-calibrated computer labs, industrial printers and scanners, as well as software applications such as Photoshop, Capture One, and Lightroom. But above all you’ll learn to use a photographer’s most important tools: your eyes and your creativity.
Learn from the Pros
Sheridan’s photography school instructors are successful working pros who’ll provide career mentoring in addition to technical and artistic instruction. You’ll learn essential skills such as:
- Negotiating contracts and releases
- Managing copyrights
- Building a self-promotional website
- Preparing a professional portfolio
- Pitching an editor
Additional Costs
Plan to spend approximately $2,000 per year in supplies (e.g. printing and mounting costs, props for studio and location shoots). You’ll receive a DSLR camera kit for your exclusive use from September to the end of April each year, as well as an external hard drive for file transfers and storage (This hard drive becomes your property.) You are not required to own your own camera or laptop.
Sheridan Applied Photography courses are held at the Trafalgar Road Campus in Oakville, Ontario.
