STORY

SKILLS MEDA 70018

Screenwriting Development and Effective Pitching

On site Dates: July 12, 26, August 9, 23, 2009
This is a studio and web-based course – the student will\
participate in on-line classes, discussions and individual instructor tutorials in addition to the four on-site classes.

Times: 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. on-site class times
Location: SCAET Building
Fee: $600.00
CLS#: 76792
Instructor: Maureen McKeon

This course is a fun way for students with an interest in documentary or drama screenwriting to build skills which will help them develop and "sell" their work. Maureen McKeon, a professional screenwriter and Sheridan instructor in the Advanced Television and Film Program, will teach you new and interesting ways to locate, collect, and juxtapose ideas, the basics of finding story "shape", and the principles of effective pitching to editors or producers. This is not a lecture-oriented course – the emphasis is on creative, active participation. At the final class, each student's "pitch practice" will be video-taped for workshop feedback. The 4 full-day classroom sessions will be spaced 2 weeks apart in order to allow students to work on their ideas and writing and gain on-line feed-back from the instructor through WebCT. By the end of the course students will have a portfolio of potential film ideas, 4 one-page proposals for both short and long-form documentary and drama films, as well as the video tape of their pitching session.

This two-day module is designed to support incoming ATVF students with limited editing skills to get better acquainted with the editing process. Session time is divided between demonstration and hands-on practice, plus experimentation with sample material. The module will introduce the concepts of nonlinear editing and include basic features of the AVID Media Composer Adrenaline system, edit sync and non-sync material, trim sequences and adjust audio.

This course is recommended for students who wish to enter the Editing stream of the Advanced Television and Film Program but who are lacking in the practical skills required. Taking the course may increase your chances to be accepted into the Editing masters class, but does not guarantee a spot in that class.
